Pipercross foam is layered in a format that catches different particles at different levels. This layering, and the thickness off the foam, is what allows our filters to catch dirt, but not get blocked up in the same way an OEM or cotton filter would.
The oil within the foam further assists in catching and spreading the dirt throughout, stopping build up in one area. This means that from service to service, the filter retains full breathing potential and isn’t slowed down by a build-up of dirt.

Why choose a foam filter?
To first understand why you should choose a foam filter, you will need to understand the main three different types of filter. Paper, cotton gauze and of course foam.
You’ll find paper filters in almost every car from the factory, they are the OEM choice, partially down to price and partially as they do filter well enough. The holes in these filters can only be so wide and working out a fine balance between airflow and filtration in this media limits the potential due to its restrictive nature.
Paper filters are also a one-time use, due to the media used. They must also be replaced with each service as they quickly get blocked up and lose performance. For these reasons, although usually the cheapest option as a single product, over a span of years these filters end up being a lot more expensive.
Foam filters take the idea of having larger holes and using oil to catch the dirt particles, but use this in a different format. The Multi laminate reticulated foam uses layers of different specifications of foam, each layer catching different sized particles whilst allowing the air to flow freely. This gives foam an advantage over the cotton filter, although both filters flow well, the foam media allows the filter to still maintain airflow even at high levels of Dust loading.
The long-term benefit is that it won't get blocked up or lose performance over time, meaning that the performance of the air filter is consistent from service to service, you maintain that brand new filter performance.
So, why choose foam?
Although it may seem relatively obvious from the information that has already been supplied, here is a diagram which will allow you to better visualise the difference between the 3.
It's due to this ability to be able to filter such high quantities of dirt efficiently, that nearly every single off road vehicle in the world uses a foam filter. Even cotton gauze manufacturers use foam oversock to prevent the cotton gauze from blocking in off road applications.
So the main take away to be had here is that, a new foam filter will flow just as well as any other filter on the market, but where it really excels is its ability to maintain that airflow throughout its cycle, meaning that it outperforms the other filters throughout the rest of its life cycle.
It's not just about performance.
A better breathing filter and more air flow can also mean you see better fuel economy from your car. Foam filters can be washed every yearly service or 10000 miles, meaning that you buy once and aren’t paying for a filter every time you service your car. Because the filter can be washed, it makes it an eco-friendlier option.

Oil, won’t that ruin my MAF?
This is a common misconception, and every aftermarket brand of filter makers will tell you this as they are almost all oiled as well. Selling thousands upon thousands of filters every year, and having next to no mention of MAF problems we will tell you the same. This myth comes from a few vehicle service shops to try and bump up the price of your service by replacing the filter with a paper instead of just bypassing it. We control the level of oil impregnated into our foam, adding just enough to allow the filter to work but not so much that it ever leaves the filter.
